What is the theory test?

The theory exam — known to everyone in Israel simply as the "teoria" — is the stage where the licensing authority checks that you know the traffic laws, road signs, safety rules, and vehicle basics before you start practical driving lessons. The exam is taken on a computer and, according to the Ministry of Transport, consists of 30 multiple-choice questions: four options per question, only one correct.

The questions are not invented and are not secret: they are drawn at random from an official question bank that the Ministry of Transport publishes as open data — including an English version. That is the single most important fact for your preparation: whoever works through the bank will not meet an unfamiliar question on exam day. This entire section is built around that official bank.

Exam structure and passing score

According to the Ministry of Transport's publications, the exam conditions are:

  • 30 multiple-choice questions: four options per question, one correct.
  • 40 minutes for the whole exam — about 80 seconds per question on average.
  • 26 correct answers to pass. Only 4 mistakes are allowed — roughly 87%. That bar is higher than many people expect.
  • Your result is shown immediately at the end, together with an answer sheet marking the questions you got wrong.
  • A passed theory exam is valid for 5 years.

Take the bar seriously: 26 out of 30 is not "get most of it right and you're fine". Four mistakes are your entire margin, which is why the difference between someone who worked through the question bank and someone who relied on common sense is usually the difference between pass and fail.

Is the exam different for different license classes?

The exam structure published by the Ministry of Transport — 30 questions, 26 to pass, 40 minutes — is stated without distinction between license classes. What changes is the questions themselves: every question in the official bank is tagged with the license classes it applies to, and the differences are substantial.

That's why the practice screen here first asks for your license class and shows only the questions tagged for it — exactly as it works on the real exam.

How to prepare the right way

1. Work through the bank, not "hacks". The exam is assembled from the bank. Every question you've practiced is a question that can't surprise you.

2. Drill by topic where you stumble. If road signs keep tripping you up — filter to signs only and repeat until the answers become automatic.

3. Take timed mock exams. The gap between "I know the material" and "I passed" is time pressure and the 26-answer bar. The mock exam here follows the official structure exactly.

4. Don't memorize answers by their position. On the real exam the order of the options is not guaranteed. Learn the logic, not the letter.
